As of today (April 1st), two new schemes have been introduced to try and cut down on Britain’s carbon emissions – the Carbon Reduction Commitment Energy Efficiency Scheme (CRC EES) and Feed in Tariffs (FiTs).

The CRC EES aims to help businesses become more energy efficient by encouraging them to make eco-friendly upgrades to their properties, while the FiTs will offer grants to homeowners who install low-carbon electricity generation technology.

Ed Miliband, secretary of state for energy and climate change, said: “The UK is leading the way in tackling climate change. Organisations and householders can play a central role in leading the move to a low carbon economy whilst saving money on their energy bills.”

And workers who have taken electrical could be in demand to install such energy-saving technology for homeowners and businesses.

The Department of Energy and Climate Change – which was formed in October 2008 – announced the initiatives.

And according to the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills, its Business Link website now – which offers free support and advice to British firms – provides a large amount of detail on these changes, which could assist both learners and employers.

Commenting on the news, skills and further education minister Kevin Brennan said: “For anyone who wants to get the skills they need into their business or take up training opportunities themselves, the websites … give them a great opportunity to find out more.”

He added that the reforms being made to vocational qualifications will be extremely beneficial to both businesses and students.

Yesterday (January 28th), pupils at the Pimilico Academy in Westminster, London saw the first school Energy Display Meter installed as part of a £12 million scheme that hopes to make students more aware of how much energy they use.

The meters, which may need to be fitted by those who have taken electrician training courses, will give real-time information about how much energy is being used at any one time.

It is thought that the initiative will encourage pupils to become more energy-efficient by allowing them to see how simple actions – such as switching off a light that is not in use – effect electricity consumption and in turn, carbon emissions.

From yesterday, every school in the UK can apply for an Energy Display Meter – if this green initiative proves popular then workers who have undertaken electrical training courses could find that their services are in high-demand.

The scheme is part of a recommendation from the Zero Carbon Task Force, which was set up in 2008 to advise on carbon reduction methods in schools. Electrical courses
